Deck contractors in New England

A deck is the most permit-sensitive outdoor project a homeowner takes on — footings below frost line, ledger attachment to the house, and railings are all inspected, and all three are where cheap bids cut corners. In New England the frost depth alone separates a real bid from a guess.

What a complete estimate spells out

  • Footing depth stated in inches and matched to local frost depth
  • Ledger attachment method and flashing detail, or a freestanding design
  • Joist spacing — 12-inch on center for most composite products
  • Railing system by product line, not just "code railing"
  • Decking manufacturer, line, and warranty registration responsibility

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Almost always, yes, once the deck attaches to the house or sits more than a couple of feet above grade. Footing and final inspections are standard. An unpermitted deck is a real problem at resale and with insurance if someone is hurt on it.

Is composite worth the premium here?

For most New England homeowners, yes on maintenance alone: no staining cycle and better resistance to freeze-thaw. The tradeoffs are heat retention in summer sun and a higher upfront line, plus the framing requirement of tighter joist spacing that should appear in the quote.
