Why documenting baby gear matters

Baby gear is the most safety-critical category of consumer product most households will ever own, and it is also the category people document the least. A car seat, a crib, and a stroller each carry a brand, a model number, a manufacture date, and a serial number printed on a sticker that will be scuffed, sun-faded, or hidden under fabric within a year. When a recall is announced, when a warranty claim comes up, when a part snaps, or when you sell the item on, that sticker is the only thing standing between you and a long afternoon of guessing.

There is a second reason, and it is the reason Our Haus exists. Baby gear arrives at the exact same moment as everything else: a new house, a nursery being painted, an appliance delivery, a contractor invoice. All of it is documentation you will want years later and nobody has the energy to file at the time. The registry is the one list that already exists, already itemized, already accurate. Importing it is the cheapest documentation win available to a new parent.

How to export your registry from Babylist

Babylist lets you export your registry as a CSV file from a desktop browser. Sign in to your Babylist account, open your registry, and look for the registry settings or manage registry area. Choose the export or download option and save the CSV to your computer. You want the registry export itself — not an order confirmation or a shipping summary, which have different columns and will not carry the product-level detail.

The export typically includes a product name column, a brand or manufacturer column, and a quantity column. Column names have changed over the years, so Our Haus accepts the common variations rather than requiring an exact header match. Nothing about the file is uploaded anywhere during parsing — the CSV is read in your browser.

How to import it into the My Life section of Our Haus

Inside your vault, open the My Life side — the half of your record that travels with you rather than with the house — and choose the baby & child category. Select the Babylist import option and pick your CSV. Our Haus parses it locally, shows you exactly what it found, and lets you review before anything is saved.

Imported items carry a Babylist import badge so you can always tell at a glance which records came from your registry and which you added later.

What information gets stored

The import brings across the product name, the brand, the quantity, and the source product link where the export includes one. Prices and store names are deliberately ignored — they are the least durable data in the file and the least useful three years from now.

From there, each record is a full item in your vault. You can add the model number, the serial number, the purchase date, the warranty expiry, a photo, the receipt, the manual, and the manufacturer registration link. For car seats you can record the expiration date printed on the shell — most expire six to ten years from the date of manufacture, and almost nobody knows their own date without going to look.

Why serial numbers matter for recalls

Recalls are almost never issued against a whole product line. They are issued against specific manufacture date ranges and specific serial or lot ranges. A notice that says "certain units manufactured between March and September" is useless to you unless you can check your unit against it in under a minute. Stored serial and model numbers turn a recall notice from an anxiety spiral into a lookup.

The same numbers are what manufacturers ask for when you register a product, and registration is how the manufacturer reaches you directly if something is recalled. Storing the number and the registration link together means you can register — or re-register after a move — at any point in the product's life.
